Innovations for Recycling Critical Raw Materials

HyProMag GmbH is part of the ERDF-funded project “Transfer Factory – Innovation Center for Science & Industry in the Northern Black Forest (IZWW).” As part of the project, a high-performance infrastructure for the development, testing, and industrial application of innovative technologies is being established at the Pforzheim site.

A particular focus is on the recycling of critical raw materials and, in particular, on the recovery of rare earth elements from NdFeB permanent magnets. These magnets are key components in numerous applications, including electric motors, generators, and other industrial products.

Our Goals

The project aims to accelerate the transfer of innovative technologies from research and development into industrial applications. To this end, suitable facilities and infrastructure will be established to enable companies, in collaboration with research partners, to develop, trial, and test new processes under real-world conditions.

For HyProMag, the focus is particularly on the further development and scaling of the Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap (HPMS) process. This process enables the processing of NdFeB magnets from used products and their return to the recycling loop.

What will be produced as part of the project?

As part of the Transfer Factory, facilities and process steps are being established and further developed for, among other things,

  • the processing and recovery of magnetic materials,
  • the production and processing of NdFeB powders,
  • the manufacture of new permanent magnets, and
  • the testing and characterization of materials and products

In addition, the Transfer Factory is intended to serve as a platform for collaboration with companies and research institutions and to support the transfer of innovative technologies into industrial practice.

Expected Results

The establishment of the transfer plant is intended to create new opportunities for joint development and cooperation projects with companies. At the same time, the technical infrastructure is intended to help further develop recycling technologies for critical raw materials, accelerate their industrial application, and thereby contribute to a resource-efficient and more circular economy.

The project thus strengthens regional innovation capacity in particular and supports the development of expertise and value creation in the field of recycling critical raw materials.

Supported by

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union and the state of Baden-Württemberg.
